The English/Language Arts and Reading coordinators work with teachers to design and carry out the division’s curriculum. The Virginia Department of Education’s Standards of Learning are included in WJCC’s English/Language Arts and Reading Standards and Objectives. Coordinators also guide the review and selection of teaching materials that support the curriculum. They help teachers through professional development in areas that need growth.
The Williamsburg-James City County reading and language arts program takes a complete approach to literacy instruction by connecting reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Students learn to:
- Use reading and thinking strategies to understand, evaluate, and respond to different kinds of literature and informational texts
- Express ideas, knowledge, and feelings in various types of writing
- Use strong speaking and listening skills to communicate effectively with others.
